A brief history of lie angle
· Gerald Pruitt
Lie angle is the angle between the shaft and the ground when the club sits at rest. It has been mentioned in books since the thirties and ignored by most golfers since.
A club with the wrong lie points the face a little left or right at impact. The effect scales with the club. On a wedge it is a few feet. On a long iron it is a small pond.
Why this matters
Most golfers have never had their lie angle checked. When we do, about two thirds of them are using clubs that are too upright.
It takes five minutes and a piece of tape. If nothing else on this site persuades you, let this one.
