Haldenmoor Swing Shop

Club fitting, repair and regripping on Highland Street in Worcester

Worcester, Massachusetts

A swing shop with a workbench and no showroom.

Haldenmoor fits clubs, regrips them and mends them, on the second floor of a Highland Street building that smells faintly of epoxy and coffee. On weekdays we open at noon. Nobody has ever needed a driver at eight in the morning.

A name from a lane in Yorkshire

Gerald Pruitt's grandfather kept a pro shop on Haldenmoor Lane in a village in the north of England. The shop was the size of a pantry and sold three kinds of grip. When Gerald opened his own in Worcester in 1988, he borrowed the name and kept the pantry.

The shop has since grown a bit, a good deal less than the prices. It still sells grips. It also fits clubs, builds them, and mends the ones that other people have given up on, and the same four people do all of it.

If you are looking for a showroom, you will be disappointed. If you want someone to measure you properly and tell you the truth, welcome.

What goes on up here

Four fittings, a repair bench and a coffee pot.

  • Drivers and fairway woods

Loft, shaft and length, measured. If your driver is fine we tell you so, and charge you for the hour anyway.

  • Irons by the set

Lie, length and weight for the whole set, tested on the net with a monitor and face tape.

  • Wedge work

Bounce and spacing for the courses you actually play, mostly municipal and mostly soft in spring.

  • Putter bench

Length, lie and loft. Most putters are an inch too long. We fix that for a flat fee.

From the comment book

Gerald told me my driver was fine and that I should spend the money on lessons. I have never been so grateful to be turned away from a sale.
Dan M., Holden
Luis regripped my irons in the time it took me to drink a coffee. They have never felt better.
Margaret O., Shrewsbury
Nadia found a lie angle problem two other shops missed. My misses went from left to center.
Pat F., Worcester

How a visit goes

Neither long nor ceremonious.

  1. You arrive

Bring your clubs and a glove. Coffee is on the bench.

  2. We watch

Ten swings, ten more, and a conversation about what you were hoping would change.

  3. We adjust

One change at a time on the bench, then back to the net to see whether it helped.

  4. You leave

With a card in your pocket that lists every number, and no pressure to buy anything.
